[edit] History

The Mt. Zion Baptist Church was birthed in 1939 by a faithful group of praying saints who met for prayer at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Bufford. In addition to the Bufford’s, this prayer group included Mrs. Fankie Williams, Mrs. Henretta Sanford, Ms. Ruth Ann Johnson, Ms. Queen Esther, Ms. Mary Johnson, Ms. Alice Greer, Ms. Eula Mae Fayn, Ms. Ella Williams, Rev. Austin Wright and Rev. Nina Gaines.

The first pastor, Rev. Charlie Williams, was elected in 1940. In 1942, Rev. R. H. Alston was elected pastor and this church was built. In 1951 Rev. I. R. Reed was elected pastor and served until his homegoing in 1977. During his pastorate, in 1975, Rev. Monroe Williams was elected Assistant Pastor and then Pastor after the passing of Rev. Reed. Pastor Monroe Williams, Sr. went home to be with the Lord in January of 2001. His son Rev. Kenneth Williams served as interim Pastor until May of that same year. In May 2001 Pastor Phil Williams was elected Pastor and Teacher.
